What Studying Abroad Actually Costs: 8 Countries Compared
The most common budgeting mistake is looking only at tuition. Real cost has five components, and for some of them the gap between countries is wider than the gap in tuition.
The five components
Tuition. The programme itself.
Accommodation. Often close to tuition, sometimes more. In London and Dublin it dominates the budget.
Living costs. Food, transport, phone, social life. The gap between Malta and London approaches 2×.
Visa and insurance. Application fees, health cover, biometrics and medical tests where required.
Travel. Flights, transfers and the first week on the ground.
Where each country lands
Indicative ranges for a four-week general language programme, tuition plus basic accommodation:
| Country | Indicative | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Malta | €900 – 1,400 | Cheapest; rises sharply in summer |
| Germany | €1,200 – 1,900 | German language; free universities |
| United Kingdom | €1,300 – 2,800 | Markedly cheaper outside London |
| France | €1,300 – 2,100 | Better value outside Paris |
| Ireland | €1,400 – 2,000 | Work rights offset the cost |
| Dubai | €1,500 – 2,400 | Simple visa, cheap flights |
| Canada | €1,600 – 2,600 | Worth it with a long-term plan |
| USA | €2,000 – 3,200 | Highest; long F-1 process |

Three things that genuinely reduce cost
Timing. June–August is both the most expensive and the most crowded. The same programme in April or October can save 20–30%.
Length. Schools discount progressively past 12 weeks, so upgrading from 8 to 12 weeks often costs less than you’d expect.
City. Brighton instead of London, Cork instead of Dublin, Montpellier instead of Paris — same country, same accreditation, markedly lower living costs.
Can you fund it by working?
Partly. Ireland allows 20 hours a week on courses of 25 weeks or more; Malta grants the same after 13 weeks. At minimum wage, 20 hours typically covers rent — not the whole cost. Treat it as relief, not a free education.
The UK, USA, Canada and Germany do not grant work rights on language programmes.
How to plan
Build the budget as a range, not a single figure, and add 10–15% on top. Currency movement, a changed flight or first-month setup costs usually consume it.
